TAWAU: About 200 people took part in the Tawau leg of the statewide torch run in conjunction with the 28th National Chinese Cultural Festival.
The five-km run, led by the festival organising chairperson Datuk Susan Wong Siew Guen from the municipal field here to Sabah Chinese High School (SCHS), raised RM70,500 for the school.
The participants, including Tawau Member of Parliament Datuk Chua Soon Bui, were welcomed by SCHS Advisory Board chairman Lawrence Chai and Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (TCCC) president Datuk Yap Yiw Sin.
The torch run was earlier held in Lahad Datu, Keningau, Tenom and Sandakan.
The festival, organised for the first time by the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah, is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri NajibTun Razak at the State Sports Stadium in Likas on November 11.
It will feature cultural performances, a fireworks display and a 30-minute show by Kota Belud-born international singer Gary Chaw who is based in Taiwan.
