KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) wants a second professional opinion on the actual condition of the City State Library building.
Its Information Chief, ChongPit Fah, said the opinion by Assistant Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister, Datuk Herbert Lagadan, could not be taken as the final say since “he is not qualified to make such an assessment."
Chong was commenting on Herbert's statement that the City State Library building was not safe for use, which justifie the move to, demolish the 3S-year-old building.
"If based on Herbert’s assessment, more than half of the buildings in Kota Kinabalu City would need to be demolished as some are even older than the State Library building.
"Even the Yayasan Sabah building is in the 'unsafe' category. The Istana Negeri is also a much older building...but, in actual facts, all these buildings are still being occupied because of proper maintenance," Chong said in a press conference at Bornion Centre, near here, Sunday.
Chong said the Government should view the matter from, another perspective rather than proceeding with the plan to demolish the building.
“I believe many of us living around the State Capital understands the significance of the State Library because during those days it was the centre not only to do study revision but also meeting for all youths.
"SAPP urges the Government not to simply demolish buildings," he said.
"We want a report from the professionals on the condition of the City State Library building," he said.
