TAWAU: Merotai needs an autonomous administration to develop and be upgraded to a district to carry on with development plans, said newly appointed Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Merotai Chairman Kenneth Goh.
Speaking during the annual general meeting of SAPP Merotai branches of Kampung Sin San, Kuhara Road, Kampung Pitas and Hotspring Road here yesterday, Goh said Merotai was falling behind in development compared to Apas Balung.
He pointed out Apas Balung has a highway and is the main entry from the airport that leads to the capital city.
"There is a well-developed township in Balung known as Taman Sawit consisting of 500 residential houses and over 100 shophouses and a new university (UiTM), teacher training college and government low-cost flats cater for the poor located in the vicinity. Even Sri Tanjung under the opposition and Tawau under the SAPP member of parliament are doing better," he said.
He said by right under the Barisan Nasional, Merotai should have been well developed with highways leading to other major districts and to the capital city.
"Merotai is the gateway to most of the big plantations and timber companies. At rush hours in the morning and evening, the single lane going to Merotai is too jammed that a 20-minute ride will take more than an hour," he said.
"It is also sad to know that the people in Merotai have to bear unhealthy environment due to a rubbish dump site and soon will pollute the Tawau River from which Tawau gets its drinkingwater supply from. Though it was stated that the dump site will be shifted to Balung, it seems the people will have to wait for a longer time," he said.
