Enforce State Commission of Inquiry 1981-SAPP

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) has challenged Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) Ieaders to take matters into their own hands in regard to the setting up of an independent investigation panel to probe the issues related to illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Its deputy president Datuk Eric Majimbun said Sabah leaders should walk the talk and not just claim commitment in pushing for the proposed Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants, which until today has yet to be set up.

He said the state government should not leave the matter solely at the mercy of their bosses in Putrajaya but find ways to set up the panel at the state level.

“If they are incapable of doing this too, the leaders should respectfully resign from their posts for failing to deliver their promises to the people," he added.

“If BN in KL continues to be reluctant to set up the RCI, we urge the state government to step up and deal with the problem themselves.

“Sabah should comply and enforce the State Commission of Inquiry 1981 or else respectfully relinquish their posts," he said in a statement issued through short messages services (SMS) here yesterday.

Eric said it was disappointing that the federal ministers had told Sabahans that after all this while the terms of reference for the proposed RCI had yet to be prepared.

What was even more disappointing, he added, was the statement from the state ministers that they should wait for several more weeks to set up the said terms of reference.

He stressed this was unacceptable as the illegal immigrants problem in Sabah had long reached a critical level, with illegal immigrants being given Malaysian identity cards through dubious means such as the Project IC.

"We all know too well that BN is trying their delaying tactic and may make an announcement on the RCI on the eve of the election, just to fish for votes.

"We also know that BN leaders will again make promises that the problem, which they could have solved a long time ago, will be solved if the people let them retain power.

"This kind of trick has been going on eyer since the 70's and so has the illegal immigrants issue. The problem is far from being solved but has gone from bad to worse under BN," according to Eric.

He accused the state government of having failed to demonstrate any convincing political will to resolve the problem.

He said state BN leaders were more concerned about securing their political positions and ensuring they are untouchable.

To the state government, serving the federal bosses, especially Umno leaders in KL, was the mainpriority, he asserted.

"The illegal immigrants issue, which has long been known to be the mother of all problems and the biggest threat faced by Sabah has to be resolved once and for all without compromise.

"The problem, if left unchecked would undermine the sovereignty of Sabah and the country as a whole," he stressed.

    1. We cannot depend solely on the Federal Government to set up the RCI for Sabah, our own leaders must come up with a way which can resolve the illegal immigrant issue.
