KOTA KINABALU: The parents of a former student of a college have resorted to legal action against the institute for allegedly failing to live up to promises stipulated in their brochure.
Speaking at a second news conference facilitated by Luyang assemblywoman, Melanie Chia, at her office in Bornion Centre yesterday, disgruntled parents, Dr. Kang Kee Yeow and his wife, Judy Chai, claimed that the facilities at the college's hostel was contrary to what students expected.
He said students were made to believe that the hostels would be equipped with the basics such as a bed, a table and a wardrobe and that only eight people would be sharing a house.
"But we found out that between 10 and 12 students were made to share one apartment, causing overcrowding," he said.
A side from filing legal action against the college, Dr. Kang has also submitted a complaint to the Prime Minister's Department's Public Complaints Bureau near here yesterday.
In his complaint, Dr. Kang alleged that the college lied about its accommodation facilities for students, citing the case of his daughter, who enrolled for a diploma course there, for which he paid RM870 for the course and lodging.
He claimed that upon enrolling for the course, his daughter was brought to an apartment that was overcrowded and lacking in the facilities promised in the brochure.
"Since the students were not supplied with a wardrobe, they had to hang their clothes by the side of their beds. This is dangerous, just in case of a fire," he said.
He further claimed that the college is currently operating without an occupational certificate (OC) issued by the relevant authorities.
"I have been made to untlerstand that without the certificate, a building cannot be occupied or allowed to operate," he said. "I am appalled by the conduct of the institute that thinks very little of the students' safety," he added.
Also present at the press conference was Alice Lim, the couple's counsel.
