LABUAN: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee said the party would defend the Sepanggar parliamentary seat and Contest major state seats in the 13th general election.
He said SAPP has held a series of discussions with other opposition parties in Sabah with the hope that SAPP can take on the Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in one to one fight for the seats it is going to contest.
While the party would defend the Sepanggar "hot seat" against the BN, it would not vie for many parliamentary seats, he said after meeting SAPP members here.
“We will defend our Sepanggar seat and we are confident that SAPP will retain the seat," he said.
Asked about the party's cooperation with Sabah chapter of State Reform Party (STAR), Yong said the two parties would collaborate to win the general election.
He said the eight points in SAPP's 2008 declaration were parallel to the STAR Borneo Agenda struggle.
Asked if SAPP was interested in fielding a candidate in Labuan, he said the party had not decided about it.
"We are assessing the situation here in this island and we have yet to make any decision whether to field a candidate here," he said.
"However, our objective here is to defeat the BN and we will support the strongest opposition party here, be it from Pakatan Rakyat or independent candidate, to stand against BN," he said.
Meanwhile, Yong said the government's decision to reject the proposed Labuan-Sabah bridge was not right and disappointing to the people of Labuan.
He said the proposed bridge would boost the economy in Labuan, as well as the Klias area in Beaufort.
"The feasibility study, costing RM5 million, by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) was a waste after the project was cancelled," he said.
On the proposed Royal Commission Inquiry (RCI) issue in Sabah, Yong described the way the government was dealing with it as confusing.
He said the government was seen as insincere in dealing with the need to set up RCI to look into the alleged of issuance of MyKad to many illegal immigrants in Sabah.
"The people are fed up with the government which says one thing but does something else, and the government is misleading the people of Sabah regarding the intention to set up the RCI.
"I believe the people will punish the government in the coming general election," he said.
Also present at the SAPP meeting here was an NGO leader Haris Ibrahim.

SAPP better make their stand clear regarding their decision to contest in Labuan or not. Don't make a statement that SAPP will not contest and when nearing the next GE, they will jump in again. As what happened in Batu Sapi.
ReplyDeleteWill SAPP leave PR to contest one on one like what they wanted during the Batu Sapi by-elections? Or will the same history repeat in Labuan this time.
ReplyDeleteI sense that the history will repeat itself again.
Deletedulu SAPP menang di Sepanggar pun atas tiket BN, tapi kini berlainan tanpa BN kita tgk mampukah SAPP mempertahankan Sepanggar?
ReplyDeleteSAPP bukan mudah nak menang di Sabah, Yong sendiri kalah teruk di Batu Sapi.
ReplyDeleteMari kita lihat saja nanti. SAPP pun dulu duduk Sepanggar atas kerusi BN tapi bukan sekarang.
ReplyDeleteSAPP pasti kalah di Sepanggar
ReplyDeletedon't be too confident.. look at the Batu Sapi election.. even YTL defeated by unpopular candidate from PBS..
