How about better B’fort-Tenom rail service?

Mail Mathew

TENOM: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) said it is surprised by the State Government's plan to develop commercially the Tanjung Aru Railway Station at a cost of RM3 billion when the upgrading of the tracks between Beaufort and Tenom has not even been completed.

Its Vice President, Jimmy Jawatah, said the decision by the Government was not in line with the initial objective of the upgrading works.

The State Railway Department, he said, received an allocation of RM400 million for the upgrading works but after five years, it still could not be completed.

"We are not against the noble intentic Government but it should give priority to resolve the present problems such as the ageing locomotive engine issue that caused frequent disruption to the train services,” he said.

He was commenting on the announcement made by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman regardin a mixed commercial development worth RM3 billion to upgrade the Tanjung Aru Railway Station.

He said most of the villagers in Paggi and Rayoh, located along the railway tracks between Beaufort and Tenom, depend very much on train services for their daily routine, including to go to the hospital and to reach the townships concerned.

He said the Government should use palt of the RM3 billion to purchase new locomotive engines and not used engines frotn China if it really practises the 1Malaysia coucept of People First, Performance Now.

He also questioned the Goverument's failure to give priority to public's safety where all crossings between Tanjung Aru and Kinarut are still being manually operated, instead of computenised system.

He said the people along Pangi and Rayoh have not been able to sell their farm produce for more than a month because the railway service has been disrupted following damage to the locomotive engines.

He said they are questioning where the RM400 million have been channelled.

Jimmy urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to investigate the matter.
