TAWAU: Member of parliament Datuk Chua Soon Bui said Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali had offended and insulted the Chinese community when" he handed 'ang pow' in white packets instead of red.
"Chua said Ibrahim's apology could not undo the damage and insult to the Chinese community.
"It is unbelievable, he (Ibrahim) as a senior citizen born in Malaysia with a mixed cultural society and he chose to be ignorant of the culture of the Chinese which is the second biggest race in Malaysia," she said yesterday.
"Chua added Malaysia celebrates Chinese New Year every year and advertisements are all over the places and even in television and it is impossible he did not notice the red colours of 'ang pow.
"He chose to be blind on the white packet. Even village children in Sabah know 'ang pow' packets are red in color," she said.
"Chua said Ibrahim was a politician when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad mooted the Vision 2020 and it is so superficial that polarizations still exist in West Malaysia.
"It clearly revealed that in West Malaysia, the culture and tradition of different races are not understood, not to mention about the minority race," she said.
"I am sad that senior citizens who came to the Perkasa Chinese New Year open house were humiliated with the white packet which is meant for the dead," she said.
“After 54 years of independence, it is still a long way to become an integrated country, so how will the government achieve 1Malaysia," she asked.
"Chua said West Malaysia should learn from Sabah where the mutual understanding and respect among the races exist in a peaceful and harmonious society.
"lbrahim should know that even Bank Islam's 'ang pow' packet is red which shows that the bank respects the Chinese.
