SAPP needs 7,000 votes to win Tanjung Aru seat

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee has directed the Tanjung Aru division and branches to kickstart and move their election machinery in earnest in preparation for the 13th general election.

He said that in order to wrest the Tanjung Aru state seat from the Barisan Nasional (BN), the SAPP candidate must garner at least 7,000 votes.

Speaking at the SAPP Taniung Aru division's annual general meeting here yesterday, Yong disclosed that there are 20,000 registered voters in the Tanjung Aru state constituency and based on previous records, about 70 per cent of the voters would come out to cast their votes on polling day.

"Based on the number, if we are to contest on a one-to-one basis, the party would need at least 7,000 votes to win the Tanjung Aru seat," Yong said.

He also said that the 13^th general election would not be held this year as the perks announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the national 2012 budget last Friday, would only be efiectively implemented next year.

"There is therefore, still a lot of time to make the preparations," Yong said, and urged all SAPP Tanjung Aru branch leaders to start identifying their voting bases and head of operation so that work can commence as soon as possible.

Commenting on the national budget, Yong said that all the proposed cash payouts to the people were a form of corruption.

"The government is giving out cash and this shows that BN is now scared and that the coalition is in for a tough time in the coming general election," he said.

He also pointed out that out of the RM232 billion budget, there was nothing allocated towards resolving the unemployment issue affecting Malaysians, especially the youths in Sabah who are forced to seek jobs outside of the state.
