P’sula wind blowing here

The first Sabah Syariah canning took place a few days ago, where a married Muslim convert had an illicit sex of an Indonesian Muslim. The punishment with whipping sentence with five lashes ofcane was carried out by Syariah High Court.

Historical none the less.

As Muslims in this State, what can we make out of this? This Syarie canning is not under the Hudud law According to the Head Sabah Syariah Judician Department, Samal Muji, but comes under the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offences Enachent, 1995.

Similar canning punishment was carried out in peninsula. It sounds rather like a yardstick of measurement or as an approval – if it’s acceptable in peninsular it will be  acceptable to Sabah or is it?

My, view, though it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re at par or better or worse compared to peninsula’s Islarric law. I would want to invite expertise in this field to come up with argument and ideas to improvise or Islamic legal system.

I’ve been receiving responses via email and sms from friends on this issue. The questions asked among them are: What does it say about our Dawah experts that they have the audacity to say it will cause no pain. What of the spiritual pain and the dignity that was taken from the person?

Please, don't generalise the sentiment that not all Muslims these days are living in the dark ages.

Also the Raja Muda of Perak Raja Muda Dr Nazrin Shah asked the State of Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Custom Council and Islamic Religious Department to review their programme. He wants development towards developing the Muslim community's economy in suitable manner.

Economic activities involving Zakat and Baitul Mal and managing the fund to ensure viability and high impact to every programme implemented. Existing management culture be revamped. A lot of time and money wasted on organising Maulidarasul and Maal Hijrah celebrations.

I would like to say, if SAPP form the State Government I would want to see that MUIS and other religious institutions, which are doing nothing be thoroughly reviewed.

Hj Amdee Sidik
Deputy President of SAPP
