TAWAU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Merotai division chief Kenneth Goh is saddened by Assistant Infrastructure Development Minister Pang Yuk Ming’s recent comment on the open space here and called for those involved in approving the project to be brought to justice.
"Every town or city development has been allocated open space. It is for the goodwill of the people.
"Everyone, including political people, is aware of the importance of open space.
"But some irredponsible people who are just thinking of their own gain, abuse their power and approve projects which are unlawful. And worse of all, the culprits go unpunished," he said yesterday.
Kenneth said the government officials who were responsible for approvirig the contracts were not apprehended and this would encourage other unscrupulous leaders to take advantage of the situation and would cook up other projects under the guise of benefit to the people.
"We have to put an end to this as it will continue as they will think that they will not be punished.
The people who were responsible should be brought to justice. The people will lose faith in the local council if nothing is done," he said.
"Pang commented that he would do what he thinks is right not based on popular decision. What is this? A popularity contest? A people-elected leader must do what is good for the people.
“The people decided what they want the open space for. The elected leader suggests that the existing building be converted into a multi-storey parking lot because he thinks he is right. This is contradictory to what he had sworn in for. The YB's idea is good but is it for the people or for personal gain? Is Tawau ready for a multi-storey car park like the one in KL? Is the government willing to support financially this venture or will it turn out to be another half-way project and will become an eyesore? "I'm sure the people will not object to any project that is good and beneficial to everybody and must be viable," Kenneth said.
At the end of the day, Najib's slogan ... Rakyat didahulukan ...will prevail. After all, what is a leader without the people? he said.
