SAPP queries OC issuance for QEH2 car park

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) is doubtful the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 (QEH2) can fully take over the forrner Sabah Medical Centre (SMC) building by the end of this month.

Its Wanita chief, Melanie Chia, said they had received information from the public about the safety and sub-standard workmanship of the new/five-storey car parks at the QEH2.

On Tuesday, Chia accompanied by SAPP Youth leaders Chester Pang, Simon Chin, Conan Teo and Jeffrey George met with workmen working on the cracks at Level Four of the car parks.

"We are not the experts. But looking at the cracks at the car park building and the on-going repair work, can we be certain the multi-level car park is safe?

"How can City Hall issue the Occupational Certificate (OC) to the car park when it is not completely faultless? How can we depend on the local authority to look after the interests of the public?" asked Chia.

"We do not wish to see substandard works at the taxpayers’ expense and at the expense of the users of the hospital. The rush by the contractor should not be at the expense of the general public! Public safety is of utmost importance in public buildings, especially hospitals," she said.

State Health Director, Dr Mohd Yusof Ibrahim had said the five-storey car park had been completed two months ago and already issued with the OC by City Hall.

However, there were on-going "repair works" and workmen were seen filling up gaps in the cracks.

"Only the experts can determine if the cracks would have an effect on the structure of the car park building and whether the filling of the gaps is good enough," said Chia.

"It is also evident that the problem is not as simple as having-cement layers falling off, and worse still, peeling off," she said.

Chia said it was also under stood that a 20 minute electricity blackout occurred at the QEH2 on Tuesday, which is highly unacceptable.

It was learnt that the public had to walk down a dark staircase during the blackout.

"It is not known if there was an on-going operation at that time and we dread to imagine if that was the case! What happened to the back up generator set at the hospital? The hospital has to buck up its maintenance too," she said.
